Google Chrome to Phone

Wow! Found a cool chrome extension by accident today. I use several browsers, so I don't normally install browser extensions. This one is called "Google Chrome to Phone". It allows you to post links, send phone numbers to dial, etc. to your Android phone from your desktop.

I know it's not new in Internet time, but I didn't find a ton of info about it. So, I've reproduced the step by step instructions with illustrations (only available after you've installed the extension?) and added some other info I found, including here. Enjoy.

Google Chrome to Phone Extension

Overview
Google Chrome to Phone Extension is a Google Chrome extension and Android application which enables you to easily send links and other information from your Chrome browser to your Android phone.
For example, at a touch of a button you can push the Web page you are viewing on your desktop or laptop to your phone to view while on the go. You can also push driving directions from Google Maps to your phone, and even send phone numbers and other selected text to your phone. Learn more about Google Chrome and Chrome extensions.

Does it work on my device?
Chrome to Phone currently only supports Android 2.2 ("Froyo") and later and only works with Google Accounts (not Google Apps accounts).

Features
  • Send browser links from Chrome to your phone.
  • Google Maps links launch the Google Maps application on Android.
  • YouTube links launch the YouTube application on Android.
  • Selecting a phone number will automatically launch the dialer with the number populated.
  • Selecting text on a Web page will copy the clipboard to Android (long press a text box to paste on Android).
  • Right-click on a link or selection in a web page to send to your Android phone
Getting started
Search for "Chrome to Phone" at http://chrome.google.com/extensions.

Install the Chrome to Phone extension and click the toolbar icon to sign in.

Search for "Chrome to Phone" in the Market on your Android device. Install the Chrome to Phone Android app.
Complete the simple set-up process (make sure to select the same Google Account as the one you signed in with on the Chrome Extension).

Click the toolbar icon to send the link or currently selected text to your phone.

Possible Problems
  • "Device not registered for user" -- This error is reported by the Chrome extension if the Chrome to Phone Android application has not been installed and set-up.
  • Google Apps accounts are currently not supported.
Privacy
Google Chrome to Phone Extension stores a mapping between your account name and a registration ID. No information sent to the phone is logged. At any time, you can press "Disconnect phone" on the Android Application to remove the mapping of your account name to registration ID.

Personal Thoughts
So, what next? Well, I just installed this and started using it today. I haven't had a lot of time to formulate more of an opinion, but my initial impression is that I love it. I'm hesitant to turn on the "automatically launch links" feature. I like that it keeps the history in case you accidentally close what you were just looking at.

I had to drive up to Social Security office in Miami today. Their webpage included hours, a description of what was nearby, etc. Normally I would manually copy all of that info into a contact entry or enter it into my personal Wiki. I'll talk about that in a future post. Now I just hit one button on the browser window. Very nice.

Oh, there's also Phone2Chrome, an Android app with another Google extension. It requires Dropbox. Fortunately, I already use Dropbox. So, that was easy to set up and seems to work just as well after a quick test.

Enjoy!
